Homework at Salendine Nook

At Salendine Nook we view homework as a supportive tool to ensure our students achieve the best outcomes they can. We also hope that it supports the learning they do in their lessons and fosters a culture of learning in all environments.

Therefore we believe that homework:

  • Must be relevant to the teacher’s curricular objectives
  • Takes place outside formal classroom teaching
  • Is primarily the responsibility of the learner

The role of parents in supporting the out of school learning of their children is greatly appreciated. To support this process, we set homework through an online system “Show My Homework”, which allows all parents to view the homework that has been set by their child’s teachers and when it is due in.

Resources to help with homework will also be attached here for parents to view. Parents and students have been issued with pin numbers to access this. If you have any questions regarding this system, please contact the school.

Amount/Frequency of Homework

Our online system indicates to parents roughly how long the student should spend on each task, in the case of Key Stage 3, this should not exceed 40 minutes per week per task. For our Key Stage 4 students, it should not exceed 1 hour per week per task.

KS3 (Year 7, 8 & 9)
English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Languages – one piece of homework per week.
Drama, Dance, Music, PE, Engineering, Textiles, Art, Food – one piece of homework per fortnight.

KS4 (Year 10 & 11)
All subjects, both core and optional, should set one piece of homework per week.

How Does It Work?

All teachers create and publish their homework online, on the school’s homework calendar. Students can manage submission of homework and view grades by clicking the SMHW link on the bottom banner of the school website or visiting https://salendine.showmyhomework.co.uk/school/home and entering your unique student PIN. If you have not received your logon details, or are new to the school, please contact the school the using our contact form or via telephone to have your PIN sent to you.

By logging in, you will see just the homework relevant to you. You can review submission times, see grades and communicate with teachers around specific assignments. Forgotten passwords are also no longer an excuse – you can check for any homework set on the whole-school homework calendar without ever having to log in!

There is also a Show My Homework app for parents and students to use on their smartphones; visit your app store and search for “Show My Homework”, sign in with your unique PIN number and you can access homework details direct from your mobile device. If you use the mobile app, you can even receive automatic due date reminders to let you know when you have homework due to be handed in!
