Welcome to our Transition information page
Meet the Team
Monday 6th - Wednesday 8th July
Year 6 students will spend 3 full days at SNHS experiencing a range of lessons.
Wednesday 8th July
Parents are invited to come & meet the Principal, your child’s form tutor and key members of staff on Wednesday 8th July
We know that it is a significant transition moving from primary to secondary school and here at Salendine Nook High School, we are working hard to ensure that your child experiences a smooth and happy transition. We have met with year 6 teachers to discuss who your child would be happy with in their form, and our staff are consulting with primary school specialists to ensure that we can best support your child with additional needs, medical conditions, or any other support necessary.
Your child is currently being placed in a form with other children both from within and outside of the catchment school area to ensure that a good balance is achieved in all form groups. We try to ensure that each child is with other children from their primary school but also that there are equal numbers from the larger schools throughout the year group, along with an equal mix of boys and girls. We know how anxious some students must feel if they are coming from smaller schools or coming as an individual from out of catchment schools, so again we endeavour to put these children together.
We look forward to meeting all our children on Monday 6th – Wednesday 8th July when they will come and join their form and form tutor. This will be a full 3 day visit where children will enjoy sample lessons, can meet our school staff and will become more familiar with the school building. Students should bring a pen, pencil and ruler in a school bag. Students should wear their primary school uniform. They may take part in a PE session so should wear their primary school PE kit. Students will be told which day to wear their PE kit.
Children should make their own way here either on foot or may be dropped off. Please be aware that there is no facility to drive down the school drive. They should be here by 08:45 and on arrival they should go to the main hall.
They will experience lunch in our dining areas whether they use our ‘Eat In’ servery or bring a packed lunch. Students will not need money on the day and anything that is purchased will be debited from their account in September. Any child on free school meals will have an allowance of £3.00. We suggest that student bring a refillable water bottle with them for the day. Children with food allergies MUST bring their own food as we are unable to cater for them on the day.
At the end of the school day, children will be released at 15:00 to either walk home, be picked up by parents or wait for older siblings in the main hall.
If your child is carrying medication, please ask them to tell their form tutor. If your child is ill and unable to visit, please ring the school on 01484 657541.
Once your child starts in September, they will be well looked after by our Pastoral Team. They will have the support of their form tutor, Head of Year and Student Support Manager to ensure they have the best possible start.
We very much look forward to meeting your young people.
Can my child change forms?
We do our very best to ensure that your child has a happy and comfortable start. Creating tutor groups is always a difficult job, trying to get the correct balance in each form and then match this group of children to the most suitable tutor and form is complex. As a result, we will not be amending any of the forms prior to September and we ask that all pupils start Year 7 in the forms that they have been allocated and allow September as their settling in period. After this time, if there are still concerns, then a meeting with the form tutor and/or Head of Year will be arranged to discuss the best way forward.
My child is the only child coming from his/her primary school – I am a little worried about this
We understand that this will be worrying for these students and parents alike. We create ‘solo’ forms where children who are outside priority catchment and in small numbers will be together. This enables students to feel as though there is somebody else in their tutor group who has similar worries and concerns about starting school; they may even become good friends.
I am unsure about the uniform I need to buy
Please refer to our school uniform webpage which gives further information about our uniform; also, on the transition webpage you will see our uniform booklet. We strongly recommend that if you are unsure if an item you are buying does not meet our standards, mainly shoes, that you take a picture of these and email your child’s Head of Year for clarification prior to buying the item.
Does my child need PE kit straight away?
In your child’s first PE lesson they will not need PE kit as they will be meeting their teacher and discussing how PE works at the school. PE kit can be purchased from a number of our suppliers in Huddersfield. For further information on the school PE kit please see the uniform booklet.
My child is a fussy eater what food will be available for my child?
Our fantastic kitchen team work hard to offer a variety of food choices for all our children, they are also always willing to listen to students’ feedback and thoughts on school food. This is done through the form reps and school council meetings. Students have a wide variety of hot and cold food available in the dining room, alternatively students are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Can my child bring their mobile phone?
In line with government policy we operate a strict ‘gate to gate’ policy on mobile phones, students are allowed phones, but they must be turned off and out of sight in bags as soon as they arrive on site. This includes the outdoor areas of the school site. Form tutors will go through the mobile phone policy with students and the consequences on their first day with us.
What equipment should my child have?
Your child will need the equipment below:
- Black pen(s)
- Purple pen
- Pencil(s)
- Rubber
- Sharpener
- Ruler
- Protractor
- Compass
- Scientific calculator –FX-85GT CW. Students can continue to use the previous models (FX83GTX or FX85GTX) however these are no longer available to be purchased.
- Coloured pencils (optional)
- Highlighter(s) (optional)
- Glue stick (optional)
Please note, as a school we provide the optional items to students in lessons when they are required.
I am worried my child may be put in the wrong sets
As a school we always use a child’s key stage 2 data and our own baseline assessment to create our sets. Please note that no set is fixed in any of our year groups; teachers and heads of departments will change a child’s set if they feel this will increase the progress and outcomes for that child.
