Welcome to the PE Department

Physical education is strong department with a well rounded team of staff. PE is a core subject throughout key stage 3 and 4 and also is offered out as examination PE in KS4 for those students wishing to expand upon their knowledge of sport and related topics. Core PE encompasses a wide variety of sports including but not limited to, football, basketball, netball, rugby, hockey, badminton, trampoline, swimming, OAA, athletics, tennis, rounders and golf to name a few. We also offer leadership and lifesaving courses throughout core PE. Examination PE currently consists of Edexcel GCSE PE from year 9 and then students are selected to continue with GCSE or move to a more vocational PE course to maximise their opportunity for a high grade. Both pathways include knowledge on body systems, methods of training, nutrition, components of fitness, health and wellbeing, performance enhancing drugs and lifestyles. Each pathway currently has an exam, with the GCSE having 2 papers, as well as a practical assessment. Students have the opportunity to expand upon their sports by taking part in residential trips involving climbing and skiing over the 5 years of study.

Department Subjects

Overview

Core PE is an opportunity for students to experience a range of different sports. Core PE is designed to give students the necessary skills for when they leave school to continue their involvement in Sport.

KS3

KS3 students are placed in sets in year 7 through a rigorous baselining assessing their individual strengths. Once in their sets, they are all given a similar sporting pathway which encompasses a wide variety of sports throughout this key stage. Sports such as Football, Basketball, Rugby, Netball, Gymnastics, Trampolining, Badminton, Tennis, Athletics, Striking and Fielding, Swimming, OAA, Dance, and Volleyball sit within this pathway.

KS4

KS4 students are given options in PE to choose which sports they would prefer to establish further knowledge in. Over the year they will take part in 6 different sports of their choosing. These include sports they have already covered in KS3, but also add Golf, Alternative Sports, Table Tennis and Softball if this is something that interests them.
