Welcome to the PME Department

Philosophy, Morality and Ethics is a brand new department launched in September 2018 covering the disciplines of Religious Studies, Personal Social Health and Citizenship education, Citizenship and Health and Social Care. The department delivers Philosophy, Morality and Ethics to all Year groups at Key Stage 3 and Years 9 and 10 at Key Stage 4 for one hour a week. This brand new subject combines Religious Studies and Personal Social Health and Citizenship education delivering beliefs and practices of the main and alternative religions, inspirational, respect and toleration, Health and Sexual Relationships, Anti-bullying and Drugs education.

Within the PME department Religious Studies, Citizenship and Health and Social Care are offered as GCSE subjects and they are very popular. A BTEC is offered in Health and Social Care to give students a gateway to a career in the Health Service. Whilst GCSE Religious Studies and Health and Social Care are new in terms of the full course, recent results in the Religious Studies GCSE short course have been excellent and GCSE Citizenship was the third highest in the GCSE subjects in 17/18.

The PME department is at the heart of our school and is the place on the curriculum where we teach our pupils an ethos of care, toleration and respect for others. We hope to broaden and enlighten pupils’ minds and instil within them a sense of morality and citizenship. Many charitable events are organised within the PME department such as Harvest Festival appeal and Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal. Assembles are organised within the PME department such as Christmas, Easter, Diwali, Baisakhi, Ramadan and Fair Trade.

Curriculum Content

Below you will be able to read what your child is studying during each half term.  ‘Key Stage Three’ will give an overview of study for Years 7, 8 and 9.  ‘Key Stage Four’ will outline teaching content for Years 10 and 11.

The ‘Curriculum Rationale’ will give you the reasoning behind why we teach your child what we do and why we have chosen to order the topics in the way we have.

We hope that you will find this information useful, but if you require anything further about your child’s education in this subject please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Department.
