Welcome to the PME Department
The department of PME stands for Philosophy, Morality and Ethics and covers the disciplines of Religious Studies, Personal Social Health and Citizenship education. The department delivers Philosophy, Morality and Ethics to all Year groups at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, with Year 7 and 8 having three hour lessons a fortnight and Years 9 and 10 having one hour lesson a week. Year 11 have one lesson a fortnight. The department combines Religious Studies and Personal Social Health and Citizenship education delivering beliefs and practices of the main and alternative religions, Careers, Health and Sexual Relationships, Anti-bullying and Drugs education. Our rationale for delivering these key subjects is found below and all teaching materials are available for parental scrutiny. Please contact the Head of PME to discuss our resources and our reasons for using them to deliver these key subjects.
Within the PME department Religious Studies, Citizenship and Sociology are offered as GCSE subjects and they are very popular. A BTEC is also offered in Health and Social Care to give students a gateway to a career in the Health Service. Whilst GCSE Religious Studies and Health and Social Care are new in terms of the full course, recent results in the Religious Studies GCSE have been excellent and GCSE Citizenship was the joint highest with Citizenship in the GCSE subjects in 2021/22.
The PME department is at the heart of our school and is the place on the curriculum where we teach our pupils an ethos of care, toleration and respect for others. Spiritual, Moral, social and cultural aspects are delivered as well as fundamental British values throughout our PME curriculum. We hope to broaden and enlighten pupils’ minds and instill within them a sense of morality and citizenship. Many charitable events are organised within the PME department in conjunction with the House system at the school , such as Harvest Festival appeal, Advent Calendar appeal, Easter Egg appeal and Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal. Assembles are organised within the PME department such as Harvest Festival, Christmas, Easter, Diwali, Baisakhi, Ramadan, Chinese New Year and Fair Trade.

Curriculum Content
Here you will be able to read what your child is studying during each half term. ‘Key Stage Three’ will give an overview of study for Years 7, 8 and 9. ‘Key Stage Four’ will outline teaching content for Years 10 and 11.
The ‘Curriculum Rationale’ will give you the reasoning behind why we teach your child what we do and why we have chosen to order the topics in the way we have.
We hope that you will find this information useful, but if you require anything further about your child’s education in this subject please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Department.
