Welcome to the History Department
History is taught to all Year 7 and Year 8 students. In Year 7 students start by looking at England in 1066 and examine the impact of the Norman Conquest. One popular activity that they do during this time is to make their own Norman castle. We then study the Tudors, with particular emphasis on Queen Elizabeth I. Students examine the problems that Elizabeth faced and look at how she dealt with these problems. In Year 8 the main topics of study are the English Civil War, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and WWI.
History continues to be a very popular choice at GCSE, with Pupils taking 2 exams at the end of Year 11. The two topics on Paper 1 are Conflict and Tension 1918-1939 and Germany 1890-1945, with Year 11 pupils having the opportunity to go to see a play called Hitler on Trial, where they have to use their knowledge of the topic to make decisions about Adolf Hitler. On Paper 2, the two topics are Norman England 1066-1100 and Britain, Power and the People. The latter topic is a theme study covering nearly 1000 years of British History and looks at how Britain has developed into the country that it is now. The History department has run trips to France (WWII), Belgium (WWI), Poland (Auschwitz) and the USA (New York) in recent years.

Curriculum Content (Currently under review)
Here you will be able to read what your child is studying during each half term. ‘Key Stage Three’ will give an overview of study for Years 7, 8 and 9. ‘Key Stage Four’ will outline teaching content for Years 10 and 11.
The ‘Curriculum Rationale’ will give you the reasoning behind why we teach your child what we do and why we have chosen to order the topics in the way we have.
We hope that you will find this information useful, but if you require anything further about your child’s education in this subject please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Department.
