This month Year 10 have had the opportunity to start to focus on their career options and choices ready for their final year with us at Salendine Nook High School. We re-introduced work experience, where the majority of our Y10 students had a full week engaged with local companies. We have received lots of very positive feedback from these employers about how our students performed. We invited over 20 employers, training organisations and education providers to our Careers Fair. All year groups attended throughout a very hot day. Our presenters were amazed at the thoughtful and interesting questions asked by our students.
We delivered an Enterprise Challenge Day, where students had to pitch a new street food start-up business to a panel of local business managers. There were some really excellent ideas and the students handled the challenging questions from the “Dragon’s Den style” judges very well.
We also had Huddersfield University students and lecturers presenting workshops for girls in STEM subjects and career opportunities and Kirklees College presenting workshops on Engineering Apprenticeships with shared experiences from one of our former students Irum on her success story.
Students also attended taster sessions at our local colleges to experience college life. Taster sessions and college open events will continue into Year 11 and all students will have access to a career guidance interview to help them with their plans.
Here are some of our students at the Engineering Centre at Kirklees College, getting some hands on experience in the motor vehicle department.’
