The Knitting and Stitching Exhibition 2017

At the end of November, Mrs McNally and Miss Evans from the Design and Technology department took their Year 10 Textiles pupils to the Knitting and Stitching Exhibition in Harrogate. The name does not really do justice to the vast array of textile art, technology and consumables on show across four halls of the Harrogate Convention Centre. Pupils were able to DT 1gain insight and inspiration from the exhibiting specialists including Jose Hendo and Bobby Britnell, one a fashion designer and the other a textile artist who both work with “Barkcloth”; a fabric made sustainably in Southern Uganda for at least the last 700 years.

"Artists in Action" offered pupils the opportunity to see working specialists DT 2produce fantastic mixed-media pieces as well as being able to speak to them about their work. The Festival of Quilts exhibited their winners’ work including the stunning "African Village" by Janneke de Vries-Bodzinga. Modern technologies including the most up to date computerized embroidery machines were also on display.

DT 3Pupils appreciated the opportunity to see "how people can create amazing things out of nothing", talk to textile artists about their own careers and they "enjoyed seeing all the stalls and all the techniques and demonstrations available". DT 4

The University of Huddersfield exhibited their undergraduate work and, whether our pupils go on to study Textiles further or not, we are looking forward to seeing how the creativity and diversity of this fantastic trip will inspire their GCSE work, and hopefully enrich their own imaginations in the years to come.
