Salters Festival 2014

On Thursday the 22nd May, Mrs Mills took a team of 4 year 8 pupils to the University of Leeds to take part in the annual Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. The day consisted of 2 big experiments, where the team had to work together to solve two problems.

First they completed a forensic science challenge involving paper chromatography and identification of non-metal ions to identify a thief only known as ‘The Blot’. After lunch, the pupils had to use their knowledge of acids and alkalis to make a series of different coloured solutions. They had to write a working recipe for each colour and were the judges then tested to check their recipes worked.

The team worked really hard all day, and were extremely proud to win 3rd prize in the Salters’ forensic challenge. Mrs Mills was told that the judges were really impressed with their hard work and explanations.

If you’d like to see what they got up to during the day, take a look at the Science department’s twitter feed, @snooksci for more information and photographs of the day.
The pupils were: F Dawson, H Gledhill, D Brooksbank and H Kazmi.
