Salters' Festival

54On Monday 18th June, four year 8 pupils travelled with Miss Hale to Manchester University to take part in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. In the morning, they carried out a 2 hour practical activity to try to solve the mysterious death of a body found on Misty Moor. They needed to use all their chemistry knowledge and skills, as well as clues from a police report to solve the crime. During the session, the judges commented on their excellent teamwork and their neat and tidy work bench.

After lunch, the team were on their own to work out the identity of 5 colourless liquids, as part of a race against teams from other schools. Again they had to use their own knowledge and ideas to come to the right conclusions.

While the judges deliberated, the pupils were treated to a Flash Bang show, where some very exciting (and noisy) chemistry experiments were demonstrated.

The team waited nervously for the results of the competitions and were delighted to find out they had won 3rd prize in the morning competition, each winning a digital alarm clock as well as a set of MolyMods for the science department.

Miss Hale was very proud of the team, who worked hard all day and fully deserved a prize for their efforts! Well done!
