Primary Afternoon 2015

In June, we invited year 6 pupils from Moorlands, Lindley, Reinwood and Spring Grove to spend the afternoon in our Modern Foreign Languages department. It was a good opportunity for pupils to get stuck into some language and cultural activities, whilst also being a good opportunity for more apprehensive pupils to come and visit our school on an extra occasion, prior to coming up to join us in September.

On arrival at SNHS, we mixed the children into 3 groups. They then spent their afternoon moving between 3 different sessions; French, Spanish and Japanese. Year 8 pupils accompanied each group around and most of the sessions were led by year 9 helpers, who did a great job presenting and engaging the younger children. We were proud of their confidence and with how well they represented our school.

In French, Y6 made use of our ICT facilities and their French language skills to create a poster in French about a celebrity of their choice In Spanish, they learned about the different places where Spanish is spoken and cut and glued to decorate a fan. In the Japanese session, which was new this year, they learned basic greetings, how to count to ten and made a booklet using special Japanese pens.

The afternoon whizzed by and everyone had lots of fun.

We had lots of positive feedback from the Y6s:

  • "I liked all the sessions because they were interesting and fun."
  • "I liked the Japanese game where we had to say the numbers and I got to use a special pen."
  • "I liked working on the computers in French and doing my own research."
  • "I really liked customising my fan with lots of different pictures of Spanish cultures."

We value our links with our Primary colleagues and our annual Primary Afternoon is a wonderful opportunity for us all to get together and have fun learning about different languages and cultures.
