October Black History Month

October is Black History Month in the UK. This year at Salendine Nook we are discussing the film Hidden Figures. Hidden Figures is a film about 3 women African-American women who worked for NASA. It focuses on the achievements of these women and the obstacles that they faced due to race and gender issues in 1960s America. Years 7 to 9 will have an assembly about Black History Month and Years 10 and 11 will have an opportunity to discuss the film during form time.

Pupils have been asked to identify their own ‘Hidden Figures’ from the black and Asian communities and to do a simple profile of their life. It doesn’t need to be a huge piece of work – see example about Katherine Johnson. It would be great to get as many pupils involved as possible. And if parent / carers want to get involved that would be even better, even if it just tracking down the film to watch at home!

Pupils can hand in any completed profiles to their History teacher or their Form Tutor.
