Year 11 Normandy 2013

normandy201343 Year 11 students and 5 staff have just returned from another very enjoyable and rewarding trip to Normandy. This is the 10th year that the History Department have visited the region. The behaviour of the pupils was exemplary and this made it one of the best trips yet.

The main aim of the trip was for pupils to learn about the importance of the D Day Landings as a turning point in the Second World War. They visited battle sites such as Pegasus Bridge, Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach, museums at Saint Mere Eglise and Arromanches and British, German and American cemeteries. This enabled them to learn about the actions of the airborne divisions as well as the soldiers who landed in Normandy on the 5 beaches (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword) and to contemplate and reflect upon the consequences of war.

But it wasn’t only about war. We also went bowling, visited the Normandy towns of Honfleur and Trouville and went on a high ropes course. At Trouville pupils went on a boat trip out to sea and they also had to buy prizes for a raffle at the bustling market. This gave pupils the opportunity to try out their French. In addition to this most pupils even took advantage of the sunny weather and the wonderful location of the hotel (just metres from the beach) to go for a dip in the sea. The hotel manager said that they were the first group to brave the sea this year!

All 5 staff agreed that this was one of the best ‘Slaphead Tours’ ever! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the pupils for being so positive, enthusiastic and for being such good fun to be with. Hopefully, all the pupils will have memories that will last them a lifetime.
