Key Stage 4

Coursework - 60%

Produced throughout the course and started in year 9. Everything that is completed contributes to the final grade.

Exam - 40%

An externally set project that includes a timed 10 hour exam in year 11, carried out over 2 full school days.

Typical Projects: Fantasy Creatures, Op Art, Portraiture, Surrealism, Fruit/Still Life, Andy Goldsworthy/Natural Form, Mock exam project.

The course is unendorsed and this means that the pupils cover a range of techniques and processes. Opportunities are provided for pupils to experience aspects of Art, Craft and Design in two and three dimensional media. This will include drawing and painting, clay work, modelling and sculpting, textiles, photography etc.

Ability to draw well is clearly an advantage for pupils wanting to choose art as a GCSE option. However, it is not considered the only route to success. Creativity, determination and perseverance, enjoyment of the subject, organisational skills, and independence are also highly valued. There is an emphasis on the completion of much work at home and pupils should not expect to succeed simply because they can draw well. Equally, pupils that are less confident in their ability should still expect to achieve well if they are prepared to work hard to complete the work set.

Pupils are assessed on their ability to fulfil four Assessment Objectives.

  • Investigate art, craft and different cultures.
  • Developing and exploring ideas through different materials.
  • Recording ideas, observations and experiences.
  • Presenting a personal response.
