Lionheart National Final

SDC14577On Friday, November 27th, a team of ten Year 11 students participated in the National Finals of a prestigious Business & Enterprise Challenge at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, Lancashire. The team were representing the school and area as Yorkshire Regional Champions having won this accolade back in October.

The event known as the Lionheart Challenge had seven other regional winners from all over England bidding to become National Champions by working on the challenge theme of "conceptualising, designing and creating a product or service that would be appropriate to help survival in extreme environments."

The theme was presented to the teams by Cath Aldred, an intrepid explorer who, amongst other ventures, has mountaineered and climbed in a remote region of Greenland. She graphically illustrated the difficulties faced by anyone taking on the hostile and unforgiving terrain of a mountain range that is miles from civilisation. The challenge she set required pupils to consider such difficulties and then generate a proposal, decide on a target market, develop and create a concept product as well as putting a finance package together enabling the idea to be realised. Finally, a marketing plan was to be created and the whole proposal presented to an esteemed panel of judges and other finalist teams.

The day ended with a gala dinner hosted by the University, at which the winners were announced.

Whilst the team came away with no trophies to show for their efforts, it is true to say that they put in a fantastic amount of effort and commitment as well as having an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It was a pleasure to observe their endeavour and enthusiasm whilst working under huge time pressures, demonstrating admirably the school's "Together We Can" approach.
